For Love & Bourbon By Katie Jennings

Today I am reviewing For Love & Bourbon by Katie Jennings.

BOURBON

Blurb:  Along Kentucky’s Bourbon Trail lies a distillery that’s a cut above the rest. For years, the Brannon family has perfected their signature whiskey. Ava Brannon, the new face of Lucky Fox Whiskey, dedicates her life to preserving that legacy. When Special Agent Cooper Lawson comes to investigate her father for his ties to the Irish Republican Army, she has no choice but to face the deadly secrets of her family’s past. Only nothing is as it seems, and her burning attraction to Cooper could either be a recipe for disaster or her saving grace.

My Review: I think this is my favorite book by this author so far. I love all the fact of distilling that are woven into this story. The main character Ava is a rich and complex woman that gives much to the story. There is enough action to keep you interested and a twist or two along the way. I give this book a 5 star.

Louisiana Longshot by Jana Deleon

Today I am reviewing Louisiana Longshot by Jana Deleon.

long

It was a hell of a long shot….

CIA assassin Fortune Redding is about to undertake her most difficult mission ever—in Sinful, Louisiana. With a leak at the CIA and a price placed on her head by one of the world’s largest arms dealers, Fortune has to go off-grid, but she never expected to be this far out of her element. Posing as a former beauty queen turned librarian in a small bayou town seems worse than death to Fortune, but she’s determined to fly below the radar until her boss finds the leak and puts the arms dealer out of play. Unfortunately, she hasn’t even unpacked a suitcase before her newly inherited dog digs up a human bone in her backyard.

Thrust into the middle of a bayou murder mystery, Fortune teams up with a couple of seemingly sweet old ladies whose looks completely belie their hold on the little town. To top things off, the handsome local deputy is asking her too many questions. If she’s not careful, this investigation might blow her cover and get her killed. Armed with her considerable skills and a group of elderly ladies the locals dub The Geritol Mafia, Fortune has no choice but to solve the murder before it’s too late.

My Review:  This book is just what I needed to read after the creepy murder one I read last. This one is full of laughter and still has a thread of mystery running through it. The older ladies of Sinful keep things hopping every minute and it has a great ending that will keep me reading more of the Miss Fortune sagas. I give this book  solid 4 stars for keeping me laughing.

Hush by Anne Frasier

Today I am reviewing Hush by Anne Frasier.

hush

Blurb:  Hush
What’s your greatest fear?

It’s criminal profiler Ivy Dunlap’s job to unravel the psyches of the most dangerous men alive. None haunts her dreams more than the killer who took her son’s life sixteen years ago, then silently disappeared into the dark. Now an urgent request for help from the Chicago police has reawakened Ivy’s greatest nightmare. The Madonna Murderer has returned to fulfill his calling. This time Ivy understands the killer and will face her greatest fear to stop him from killing again.

My Review:  Creepy. A good creepy if you are into thriller books. I got really engrossed in the book. It is like an intense criminal minds show. If you get spooked by noises in the night you might want to read it in the daytime though. There are a few editing problems but it is a good read I give it 4 stars.

Citadels of Fire by L.K. Hill

Today I am reviewing Citadels of Fire by L. K. Hill.

CIT

Blurb: In a world where danger hides in plain sight and no one aspires to more than what they were born to, Inga must find the courage to break the oppressive chains she’s been bound with since birth. Even as a maid in the infamous Kremlin, life in 16th-century Russia is bleak and treacherous. That is, until Taras arrives. Convinced that his mother’s death when he was a boy was no mere accident, he returned from England to discover what really happened. While there, he gains favor from the Tsar later known as Ivan the Terrible, the most brutal and notorious ruler ever to sit upon the throne of Russia. Ivan allows him to take a servant, and to save Inga from a brutal boyar intent on raping her, Taras requests Inga to stay in his chambers. Up against the social confines of the time, the shadowy conspiracies that cloak their history, and the sexual politics of the Russian Imperial court, Inga and Taras must discover their past, plan for their future, and survive the brutality that permeates life within the four walls that tower over them all, or they may end up like so many citizens of ancient Russia: nothing but flesh and bone mortar for the stones of the Kremlin wall.

My Review: Wow! I was totally absorbed in this book. Love rich historical novels. This one wove such a fascinating tale of Russia in the time of Ivan the terrible. Told from the view point of a young kitchen maid and a half Russian half English noble it moves along at a good pace. I see some reviewers referring to the length of the book but my only complaint is that it ended when it it did. I could have stayed lost in this world for a lot longer I sincerely hope there are follow up books. I highly recommend this book. I give this 5 stars.

Servant by J. S. Bailey

Today I am reviewing Servant by J. S. Bailey.

SERVANT

Blurb:  Bobby Roland knows things he shouldn’t.

Plagued with premonitions of disaster, he fights to save others’ lives. What Bobby doesn’t foresee is that rescuing a stranger from death will place him in the line of fire.

He discovers a world of evil spirits and tormented souls when he becomes entangled in a madman’s plot to kill the Servant, a man chosen by God to exorcise demons from the possessed. When Bobby falls under spiritual attack following the encounter, he must choose between saving others and saving himself.

My Review: This book is great. The authors style reminds me a great deal of Dean Koontz. Love the supernatural. It is paced well and the writing is great. I highly recommend this book. Can’t wait to read more of what happens to the main character in the next book. I give this book 5 stars.

Wind Chime Wedding By Sophie Moss

Today I am reviewing Wind Chime Wedding by Sophie Moss.

Blurb: Second grade teacher, Becca Haddaway, is weeks away from walking down the aisle with her high school sweetheart when she learns that the Heron Island Elementary School is about to be shut down. In the midst of a whirlwind of wedding planning, she launches into a last-ditch effort to save it. But the one man who can help her is determined to make her question every decision she has ever made–including the man she’s about to marry.

Former Navy SEAL and son of the current Maryland governor, Colin Foley, is finally starting to feel whole again after losing his leg on a career-ending deployment in Afghanistan. After struggling for months to figure out what to do with his post-military life, he’s found a new mission–opening a rehab center for wounded veterans on the peaceful Chesapeake Bay island. All he needs now is a woman to share his new life with…and he knows exactly who he wants. With a little help from the island’s magical wind chimes, can Colin convince Becca to change her mind before it’s too late?

My Review: What a treat to visit Heron Island once more. MS Moss does a wonderful job of putting you into the story and making it seem like you are visiting friends. The book draws you in to the characters and surroundings it is if you were there. Having spent some of the best times at seaside towns I loved this book. I have read the other Windchime books and this one is a wonderful addition to the series. I give this book 5 stars.

A Cold Dark Place by Toni Anderson

Today I am reviewing A Cold Dark Place by Toni Anderson.

COLD

Blurb: Justice isn’t always black or white. Sometimes it’s cold and dark.

Former CIA assassin Alex Parker works for The Gateway Project, a clandestine government organization hell-bent on taking out serial killers and pedophiles before they enter the justice system. Alex doesn’t enjoy killing, but he’s damn good at it. He’s good at dodging the law, too—until a beautiful rookie agent has him wondering what it might be like to get caught.

FBI Special Agent Mallory Rooney has spent years hunting the lowlife who abducted her identical twin sister eighteen years ago. Now, during an on-going serial killer investigation, Mallory begins to suspect there’s a vigilante operating outside the law. She has no choice but to take him down, because murder isn’t justice. Is it?

When Mallory starts asking questions, The Gateway Project management starts to sweat, and orders Alex to watch her. As soon as they meet, the two begin to fall in love. But the lies and betrayals that define Alex’s life threaten to destroy them both—especially when the man who stole her sister all those years ago makes Mallory his next target, and Alex must reveal his true identity to save the woman he loves.

My Review. I loved this book. I could just leave it at that. Anyone who loves the thriller who done it type books should read this one about the elusive serial killers and the ones who hunt them , both the legal hunters(FBI) and the shadowy illegal ones. This book can keep you guessing almost to the end. I give it a 5 star review.

Echo by Alicia Wright Brewster

Today I am reviewing Echo by Alicia Wright Brewster.

ECHO

Blurb: A young adult science fiction adventure novel, this story features a strong, but flawed heroine and complex world building, along with themes of friendship, loss, faith, and tolerance—and the end of the world. With the countdown clock showing 10 days until the end of their planet, everyone has been notified and assigned a duty—but the problem is no one knows for sure how everything will end. Energy-hungry Mages are the most likely culprit, traveling toward a single location from every corner of the continent. Fueled by the two suns, each Mage holds the power of an element: air, earth, fire, metal, water, or ether. They harness their powers to draw energy from the most readily available resource: humans. Ashara has been assigned to the Ethereal task group, made up of human ether manipulators and directed by Loken, a young man with whom she has a complicated past. Loken and Ashara bond over a common goal: to stop the Mages from occupying their home and gaining more energy than they can contain. But soon, they begin to suspect that the future of the world may depend on something unexpected—Ashara’s death.

My Review: This was a different twist on the end of the world concepts. This time everyone know when it will happen and apparently they keep rewinding time to try to fix the fact that is going to happen. Confused yet?. I admit there are times in the book when I was a little confused as well. This time there are enough things different about the rewind that no one seems to really know what to think about it. There is lots of action and drama with a little romance thrown in and it does make an enjoyable read. I give this 3 stars.

Where Tomorrow Waits by Din Ka

Today I am reviewing Where Tomorrow Waits by Din Ka.

tomorrow

Blurb: Where Tomorrow Waits unfolds over the haunting landscape of Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge war era. Dara, a young girl whom instead of enjoying the carefree life of a teenager, is trapped between the opposing burdens of her mother’s secret affair and her own loyalty to her father.

Soon enough, Dara discovers her mother’s selfish secret is just the beginning of her sufferings as it leads her on a path filled with more lies, betrayal, and molestation. As Dara’s father, Muirye, learns about the consequences behind her mother’s actions, he sets forth to make a sacrifice that would ultimately change Dara’s life forever. But before Dara can learn to accept the changes her father has brought forth into her life, she must first survive the Khmer Rouge genocide.
Dara is left with a heartbreaking choice— risk her life trying to escape to America, a promised land of opportunity, or stay behind and sacrifice everything to search for her father, who might not even be alive. The choice she makes takes her on a haunting journey that spans three decades of guilt, lies, and what if questions. The deep dark twisting truth Dara accidently uncovers, which her mother had been guarding all her life, is something Dara considers far worse than death.
Will Dara ever be able to accept the deep dark twisting truth she has been unknowingly living with all her life, or will death finally grasp her by its fingertips?

My Review: I really feel this should be a must read. The deeply moving and truly horrifying events that take place when you live in a war zone should be felt by everyone. Maybe we would tend to think twice about the value in war. I truly hesitate to say I loved the book seeing how so much sadness was dealt with, however I did think it was delivered in a masterfully way. The way the characters grow  and evolve throughout the book and learn to deal with the tragedies of the past and move beyond them is inspiring. I give this book 5 stars. If you like historical novels this one is for you.

September Sky by John Heldt

Today I am reviewing September Sky by John Heldt.

SEPTEMBER

Blurb: When unemployed San Francisco reporter Chuck Townsend and his college-dropout son, Justin, take a cruise to Mexico in 2016, each hopes to rebuild a relationship after years of estrangement. But they find more than common ground aboard the ship. They meet a mysterious lecturer who touts the possibilities of time travel. Within days, Chuck and Justin find themselves in 1900, riding a train to Texas, intent on preventing a distant uncle from being hanged for a crime he did not commit. Their quick trip to Galveston, however, becomes long and complicated when they wrangle with business rivals and fall for two beautiful librarians on the eve of a hurricane that will destroy the city. Filled with humor, history, romance, and heartbreak, SEPTEMBER SKY follows two directionless souls on the adventure of a lifetime as they try to make peace with the past, find new purpose, and grapple with the knowledge of things to come.

My Review: I am never disappointed when I read one of this authors books. I love his time travel concepts and the characters he weaves into them. This story is no exception. Really like the time period this book deals with and the relationships that develop between the modern day father and son and the people of the past. In meantime you get to learn about a few historic facts of Galveston Texas. The twist at the end was great too. I give this book a full 5 stars. Keep up the good work Mr. Heldt. You have a fan here.
